Triathlon

Triathlon for students? Swimming, cycling and running consecutively? Isn’t that something for endurance athletes only who enjoy suffering for 10 hours and have enough time to spare to practise for this?
No! Most triathlons only require a 1 or 2 hour exertion. The often organised sprint race, for instance, only consists of 750 m swimming, 20k cycling and 5 k running.
Smart triathlon practices ensure a broad physical development providing some kind of exciting challenge for everyone.  In general, you have stronger and weaker points. During practice you can focus on improving what you can do better and maintaining what you do well. And if you are already quite strong at all elements? What about optimising your transition techniques? :-)
You can prepare for a triathlon by attending the triathlon swimming and/or triathlon running group lessons and/or the cycle clinics.
The group lessons focus on events such as the Easter swim/run and the Utrecht Triathlon.

Cycling
Everyone can cycle! And if you wear a helmet you will soon be allowed to join a triathlon. If you want to participate in the weekly cycling group lessons, we advise you to become a member of the fun Utrecht Student Cycling Club De Domrenner

In addition, from spring, you can join the special triathlon cycle clinics that will be organised in cooperation with De Domrenner. During the clinics attention will be paid to the ideal aerodynamic posture, the transition from swimming to cycling, match rules and techniques.  If you have a flattened handle bars this is bonus but certainly not a requirement.

The dates of the clinics will be announced early March. .

Student Sports Club
USTV Triple is not officially established, but has already organising a course preparing for the Utrecht triathlon together with LABC Triathlon. They are looking for people interested in turning USTV Triple into a proper student sports club. For more information, please send an e-mail to Roel Kwaaitaal. For inspiration, check the websites of the student triathlon sports clubs in Groningen and Maastricht.

Triahtlon running

Running is the most-practised student sport and appears to be relatively simple. During a triathlon, however, it is the cruellest element. How do you create time to practise when you are already swimming and cycling? How do you practise without getting injured? How do you ensure that you are able to run well after already having swum and cycled?
In order to help you with all this, we offer a running practice immediately after the triathlon swimming group lessons. In addition to paying attention to your running techniques and to interval running at your own pace, we will also focus on the triathlon-specific dynamics including practising the transitions.

NB: the running practices start at the Krommerijn swimming pool (Weg naar Rhijnauwen 3). You can report to the instructor present there. We gather in front of the entrance to the pool.

Triahtlon swimming

For some the swimming part of the triathlon may be a piece of cake, for others is feels like the eternal challenge. You will lay the foundations of your swimming skills in the autumn and winter; the fine-tuning will be done in spring.
The swimming practices always start with improving the basic front crawl technique. Experienced swimmers will be offered a challenging interval training too. Triathlon-specific exercises will be a regular part of the training sessions, such as swimming in a group and rounding a buoy.  For a sound triathlon preparation, you are recommended to attend the running practice straight after the swimming practice: check the triathlon running group lesson (and the tab at the top of the page).

NB: the swimming practices take place at the Krommerijn swimming pool (Weg naar Rhijnauwen 3). You can report to the instructor at lane 5.
